Proposed Syllabus for BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) Course under  Rajshahi Medical University.

The origin of Unani system of Medicine is in Greece. This ancient system of natural medicine had been practised since the last 6000 years. At present, globally this system of Medicine has been regenerated rapidly. It has in-depth potential in treating of diseases and disorders through a holistic approach with much less adverse effects. It is officially recognized and practised throughout Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Present government of Bangladesh is most friendly to this system of Medicine.

Unani Medicine is based on the basic principles of four humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. Fire, water, earth and air are the four components of this system. It has greater significance in the treatment and management of diseases like infertility, weight loss, vitiligo, diabetes, kidney stone, obesity, habitual constipation, etc.

To develop this system of Medicine and to produce skilled professionals, Hamdard University Bangladesh has opened the Department of Unani Medicine in 2014. It is the only private University offering BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery) program with quality education at the Undergraduate level approved by the Government and UGC.

UNANI COURSE DETAILS AND ELIGIBILITY

The BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery) program is being offered by public and private Universities in Bangladesh and by many a institutions in India and Pakistan. The eligibility of the program is that one should complete 12th standard with required aggregate in physics, chemistry and biology from a recognized institution/ college. The Program consists of 5-year academic courses and 1-year internship. After graduating, they can also pursue MD (Mahir-e-Tibb) and/ or MS courses. The interested candidates may also pursue PhD in chosen areas of Unani Medicine.

PROSPECTIVE CAREER IN UNANI MEDICINE          

With the change of time, there are also modifications in the Unani field. Students of Unani are acquainted with other relevant disciplines such as physiology, preventive medicine, pharmacology, pathology and forensic medicine. Such combinations make the candidates more knowledgeable and prepare them to cope with the demand of the market economy. Some specialized fields are also available for BUMS-graduates. They are: Moalijat (Medicine), Ilmul Qabala (Obstetrics), Tahaffuz wa Samaji Tibb (Community Medicine), Ilmul Advia (Pharmacognosy), Ilmul Saidalah (Pharmacy), etc.

After completing the BUMS program, the students can pursue careers as Unani Physicians and Pharmacists; they may join in government hospitals, dispensaries, Unani companies, Unani hospitals, teaching institutions, etc. In recent times, the Government has established research centers and councils for the promotion of Unani Medicine. In addition, these professionals are also hired by private sectors with lucrative salaries. Unani Medicine has a big impact in the management and treatment of a large number of diseases and disorders. The discipline is quite effective for lifestyle related disorders, infertility and other geriatric problems.  The major employers are the following:

  • Government of Bangladesh;
  • Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh;
  • Over 500 Medicine manufacturers;
  • Unani Medicine Teaching Institutions; and
  • Non-Government Organizations.
